Anand Karaj — the Sikh wedding ceremony explained

Anand Karaj — the "blissful union" — is the Sikh wedding ceremony. It happens in the Darbar Sahib (the main hall) of a gurdwara, in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib, with the four laavaan as the binding ritual. Here's what every couple should know before the day, and what every guest should expect when invited.

01The four laavaan — the heart of the ceremony

The Anand Karaj is built around the four laavaan — four hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib. The couple walks slowly clockwise around the Guru Granth Sahib, once for each laav. The bride leads on the first three; the groom leads them in following the Guru.

First laav — Spiritual surrender to the Divine.
Second laav — Acknowledgement of true union.
Third laav — The state of detachment from worldly bonds.
Fourth laav — The marriage is complete; the couple now walks together as one soul.

Each laav is read by the granthi from the Guru Granth Sahib, then sung by the ragis (musicians). The kirtan that frames the ceremony is itself part of the wedding — many couples hire a specific raagi jatha for this.

02GTA gurdwara logistics

The Greater Toronto Area has dozens of gurdwaras that host Anand Karaj. The flagships:

Ontario Khalsa Darbar (Brampton) — largest in GTA, capacity for big weddings, multi-stage parking.
Sikh Heritage Centre (Brampton) — popular alternative, slightly smaller, often easier to book on short notice.
Sukh Sagar Gurdwara (Brampton)
Guru Gobind Singh Childrens Foundation (Scarborough) — the GTA's main Scarborough Sikh venue.
Sukh Sagar Hindu Sikh Centre (Vaughan) — north GTA option.

Gurdwaras are typically free or donation-based for the ceremony itself. Langar (the community meal after) is also free, supported by community donations.

03Protocol — what to know

Dress code: Modest, head covered (men + women), bare feet. Bride wears red or pink lehenga / salwar; groom wears sherwani with kalgi turban.

Sit on the floor: The sangat (congregation) sits on the floor, divided by gender (women on one side, men on the other). Chairs available for elderly or accessibility needs.

No alcohol on premises: Gurdwara grounds are dry. Guests should not enter under the influence.

No meat on premises: Langar is always vegetarian. Bringing in non-vegetarian food is forbidden.

Photography rules vary by gurdwara: Some allow photos in Darbar Sahib, others restrict it to designated photographers. Confirm with the granthi or gurdwara office in advance.

Bowing to Guru Granth Sahib: Both bride and groom bow on entering, on exiting, and at multiple ritual moments during the ceremony.

04Timeline — what happens, in order

A typical Anand Karaj runs 90 minutes to 3 hours:

1. Milni (15-30 min) — meeting of the families outside the gurdwara before entering.
2. Entry to Darbar Sahib — couple bows to the Guru Granth Sahib.
3. Ardas (5-10 min) — opening prayer.
4. Hukamnama — the Guru Granth Sahib opens to a random page; the granthi reads the message.
5. Lavaan (45-90 min) — the four hymns + four circumambulations, one per laav.
6. Closing prayer + sweet (kara prashad) — distributed to all guests.
7. Langar — community meal, all guests welcome.

05Booking the granthi (priest)

Most GTA gurdwaras have an in-house granthi who performs ceremonies as part of the gurdwara service. You typically don't need to "hire" a specific one — the gurdwara assigns based on schedule.

If you want a specific granthi (community elder, family priest), confirm in advance. Some gurdwaras allow this; some don't.

For the kirtan portion, hiring a specific raagi jatha (musical group) is common — they sing the laavaan and surrounding hymns. Cost: $300-$1,500 depending on the group's reputation. Book 4-8 months out for popular jathas.

§ Frequently asked

Can a non-Sikh marry in a gurdwara?

Sikh tradition (per the SGPC) requires both partners to be Sikh for an Anand Karaj. Some gurdwaras allow ceremonies for couples where one partner has formally converted (taken Amrit) or is in the process. Many couples have a civil ceremony first, then a separate religious or cultural ceremony — discuss with the gurdwara well in advance.

How long does an Anand Karaj take?

The ceremony itself runs 90 minutes to 3 hours. With the milni before and langar after, plan for 4-5 hours total at the gurdwara. Guests often stay for langar; the wedding party leaves after for photos and the reception.

What's the difference between Anand Karaj and the reception?

Anand Karaj is the religious wedding ceremony in the gurdwara, free of alcohol, formal dress, and follows strict protocol. The reception is a separate event the same day or next day — at a banquet hall, with dinner, dancing, and a DJ. Most South Asian Sikh weddings include both, often with a Mehndi night before and a Walima/Reception after.

Do we need to book the gurdwara months in advance?

For peak season (May-October Saturdays) and the popular gurdwaras (Ontario Khalsa Darbar, Sikh Heritage Centre), book 8-12 months out. For off-peak weekdays, 4-6 months is usually enough.
